Paul D: "when I rap I like rapping in pictures"

If any of you remembers my interview from the 13th of August, you may also remember the Name Paul D, He was the director of the track "Last Tango" by "deResnes" but Paul D also is an MC!
Today emcee and performer Paul Democritou (Paul D) talks about his new track "Back In Athens B***" which just released under the record label "Panik Records" with the video clip which he directed himself!
He is known from playing at some of the largest clubs in Europe but also along side with some of the most respected artists worldwide such as Lord (Public Enemy), Physique (Missy Elliot), Hot Rod (G-Unit) our own Claydee and many more. Paul has many projects, Lets see what else he can tell us!

- Hello, Paul, where you are currently?

Hi, currently I am in Athens but as you have witnessed I am always on the Go traveling around for shows and various other projects. I just got back from, my summer tour on the Greek islands and getting ready to go to Germany and Kenya... trying to finish off projects in between!

- To start off the interview can you tell me a little bit about your background.

Well Iam Greek but was actually born in North London, UK and then moved to Greece

- How did you get involved in the music industry?

Thats actually an interesting question, I actually dont know! Seriously at some point I used to own a Night club (Jesters) where I used to throw Mainstream Hip-Hop/Urban parties and live Rock band events. I then proceeded to do live Hip-Hop nights for the indie section (Underground) and also brought in names such as Lord (Public Enemy), Tillo (Orishas) and more... Before that, one day at a main mainstream party I threw the MC never showed up, I picked up the microphone and hosted, people liked it! Time went by as I got better and more involved and I was then called to host at other clubs and venues! everything kinda blew up from there!

- What kind of music were you listening to growing up?

The Smurfs... well a little after the smurfs being in North London and all I started to listening to Raggamuffin then Reggae... later mainstream music and Rock... I LOVED Body Count. ( I started listening to)

  - How would you define your music?

I wouldnt, Im here and there, see I just like to rap, I have rapped to everything from Greek music, House, Rock, Reggae... as long as I am feeling the beat and my lyrics, Im good for it... Now Some people may call it commercial, underground, real, fake whatever i just RAP... Call it what you want!

- You are "famous" in europe. You've featured collaborations tracks and features on compilations with names such as DMX and Snoop to name just a few. Could you please tell me how you've started your journey as an VIDEO producer?

LOL I wouldnt say I am famous, I d like to be famous! umm producing, well back when I had 2real LTD it used to be an event company where I used to rent large venues and bring in large names and bands, I also tried to manage artists back then, We also did a few video clips with Sherif Francis where I helped bringing people, used my club and set up various things and he put me as an executive producer on the album and videos which I was also managing. It was small time, basically one day years later I helped out Sherif in a video for the rapper named Midenisti then for Mattyas! Apparently I was good at solving problems and went into deatials on aesthetic so Sherif offered me to be his assistant. We did "Call Me" for Claydee where I did everything from production to floor managing to casting and bringing the dancers and people and more, we won a VMA, We became a team, I became his L.Producer/Production manager, 2real LTD became 2real Productions LTD

 - Where did you learn how to to direct a music video?

Well when I rap I like rapping in pictures, I was also very into movies and have a talent for watching and learning. I guess I just see pictures! I learnt from Sherif Francis (which still helps me out today).... Sherif and google!

 - What is it about you that sets you apart from the rest of today’s emcees?

The fact that I dont rap on stage (well I do sometimes) but mostly I Host, hype up the crowd and/or support the main singer or Deejay. Im a Party Emcee... not a rapper. think of it as an animator for the most part, I was just lucky to have a deep voice and learn how to use it.

 - What/who are you inspired by when writing your lyrics?

Pictures! seriously pictures in my mind when I listen to the music, the same I do when I create music videos. I used to write alot of poetry when I was young, and I mean ALOT of poetry. basically I used to day dream alot.

 - What do you like and what don’t you like about the music industry?

I think its all good! it is what it is!

- What do you do in your spare time?

I basically go to the gym and workout, I do martial arts but most of the time Im working, Im reading, learning... See when people go for coffee Im in the studio or editing a video with my editor. When people go out on weekends, Im networking or studying. When people are with their friends having fun, Im on my computer fixing my site or writing lyrics... I even work on my birthday... its a hard game and the competition is hard also... remember everytime you are bored and playing on your playstation? someone out there is taking vocal lessons or learning new tricks of the trade with a camera and an editing studio. you have to sacrifice things you want to do for in order to become what you want to be.

- Any future music projects coming soon?

Yes, as a matter of fact I just released my new music video "Back in Athens Bitch" featuring myself and Deep Connection. its an "art" video about the everyday life of a microphone! check it out!

- Thanks Paul for doing this interview. Anything else you'd like to share ?
